Is this for a desktop or laptop, cant recomend a card without knowing that.
Yes you need a router and an internet connection. Wifi does not just exsist in the air, someone has to have internet service and a device that transmits wifi. Wifi does not just equal the internet, all wifi is is a wireless version of a lan ethernet cable; you still need all the networking hardware, you just use the wifi protocal to send the data without a cable.
If this is for a desktop and you can put the router in the room with desktop (or run a cable), using an ethernet lan cable is much better then wifi.
