So I called Samsung and they cant really answer my question because they mainly deal with windows and mac. My question is I want to get the evo for my ps4 but dont want to drop $500 if it is going to slow down in a few months. Does anyone know if the garbage collection will be sufficient as I dont expect to be writing and deleting huge amounts of data. Just when I save a games save and game data. Mainly want it for the size accompanied by the fast loading times and hopefully a rise in frame rate. Also will the garbage collection activate by itself or will it not because of it being in a ps4? Do I have to let the ps4 idle to activate it if not?

Thanks!

HGST Travelstar 0S03563 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" $80 plus 10%.

WD black only makes a 750gb for $100.

The HGST is the same ones used in top end gaming notebooks like asus g750 js and jz ($1800-3000), alienware $2000+, msi gt dominator pro $2200+. They are great, built to last, and id put them just a step below a WD Black (which is worth its extra price as its a damn good drive).

WD blue's are also good as theyre 7200 but not as strong, wd reds are 5400 built to spin 24/7 and save energy not give performance. WD greens are energy effienient built to shut down and save power however possible, not something id want when looking for performance. Seagate I...
Don't get a SSD for a PS4. they aren't designed for them and will not treat them well it simply won't last and will slow down (no trim etc) It will also have no effect on your FPS. Just get yourself a good 1Tb HDD throw that in there and call it a day and spend the $450 saved on something else.

while I this won't answer your question before dropping any cash there are sites that compair SDD HD vs "normal" HD with the PS4. Basically there is almost no boost at all other than maybe the intial install however most game so far on the PS4 actually stream install so they install while your playing. So there isn't any point in getting a SSD to put in your PS4.

I agree with all no ssd for ps4 as wasted money. Best bet is 1tb hhd 7200 rpm drive. As for Samsung evo, if your not using it as the boot/windows install main disk, your read/write speeds are crap. Crap as in 300mbps tops, which will slow down when you start reading/writing over the same bits. There is no trim enabled which speeds things up once you fill up one round of space. As for non windows boot, the reason the evo gives good numbers is the software, especially ready cache, and without that its really not a top performing ssd. I know this as I use one as boot drive in laptop and another 1tb evo for data drive. The 512gb Samsung 840 pro is a champ for non boot as it doesn't rely on software for speed, but it maxes at half a terabyte and costs about double the evo.

I had seen in a video of skyrim for the ps3 side by side with the standard, hybrid and an ssd. It seemed to keep the frame rate up when moving into different areas that need to load. I had read elsewhere that gc would be fine if it was just in use with a ps4 and some said that it wouldnt be fine so im really confused haha. I guess I mainly want it to keep frame rate up during cod because ill notice choppy parts and it will start to slow sometimes (idk if the ps4 is accessing my hdd at that point or not im kind of assuming it would do what it did on skyrim but I can also be COMPLETELY wrong). I guess im hoping on a dream here.
As to the other comments about a 1tb 7200rpm drive what would you all reccomend for me? Im just getting into the "switching out hard drive phase"
Thanks!

Skyrim on the PS3 was (maybe still is) bug ridden mess. At one point they weren't even going to come out with the last DLC (I think it was vampires) because they were having so many problem so not really a good game to judge speed with.

Seagate I will never buy again, ive went through 6x 3tb and 3x1tb drives in just this past year. Only one made it to 400 PicaBytes total read/written, the others only a few hundred TB before they just stop. Toshiba and hitachi are alright for desktop, but not performance just budget regular joe hard drives.
