Hey. Im gonna get a Radeon 7850 but i need a 500w psu that will work with the Dell Optiplex 780. I have heard people say ATX will not work, but im not so sure. Please clarify this or help me find a good 500w power supply for my Optipex 780. Thanks.

Solution
Sorry to burst you bubble but not knowing the form factor is really the opposite of seeming like he knows his stuff. Please refrain from attempting to help when you are not knowledgeable in the area. Google could have told you it was atx psu though. Also please don't bump as that's grounds for an immediate lock and you're lucky a nice mod saw this and won't lock it just yet.

The case/mobo is btx form factor which was really common in that era for dells. Btx uses the same atx form factor psu, they just changed the mobo layout. Although you have to be careful with older dells and their proprietary components so should google anyways. But it's not proprietary and any psu you find on the market will be atx and any decent one will have...

No. Thats the SFF mine is the Mini tower. Mine also has 4 gb of ram but thats not important.
I understand that it needs 500w. So what kind of PSU will fit in this rig?
Sorry for bumping, man

It's okay, you're just not really supposed to. I know this is your first thread.

So it's this one, then?

Well, that's not quite right. Sure, it will work, but it won't fit in your case. You either need to get a PSU that will fit in your case, or you will need a new case. Unless you don't mind your PSU sitting outside the case! (Don't do this; it is dangerous.)

Please measure the PSU. I might be able to find a standard form factor that matches.

Also, you could try calling back Dell. Ask them what form factor the PSU is.

In case you don't know, 20 + 4 is talking about the cable that plugs into the motherboard:

You seem to know your stuff. Do you know a PSU that will fit good?
Not able to measure. But if you Google dell optiplex 780 MT psu you should find it

But it's not proprietary and any psu you find on the market will be atx and any decent one will have 20+4.

But time for the bad news. You cannot use a 7850 because you cannot use a dual slot card. The cpu duct gets in the way and the rear expansion slot would also need to be modified. So even if you did get a psu you can't fit in the gpu. Either find a single slot card which are just lower end 7750 range gpus or get a new pc.

Solution
I didn't really google because I know any of the newer ones with ddr3 are not proprietary and I know what a blunder it is to upgrade a dell btx pc. But you could google "optiplex 780 psu upgrade" which should get you some dell forum links which are the best when dealing with dells. You'll see them suggesting atx psus.

Okay, thanks! I was only googling the name of the PSU. There was absolutely no information on form factor or dimensions on Amazon, in the PC manual, etc.

I'm glad you caught the issue with the graphics card not being able to even work in the machine. That hadn't even crossed my mind!

Kudos!

well thanks, but i went with the 750 ti. No need for a power connector. and that has one of those "dual slot" power grate things, and it works fine. so yeah. Thanks though
