Hey everyone! So i got an interesting problem here. I Have a seagate 1000gb model 1000dm003. Now ive had it for about a year and a half and everything was working fine till last night when the computer kept freezing, and then as i restarted it told me to put in a bootable device. I looked further and noticed that BIOS wasnt detected the hdd. I tried all connectors and different wires to no avail. Ive tried other sata hard drives and they work perfectly so i doubt its the motherboard. I attached it to my laptop using a external case and it recognizes it and shows all the files still on it. Now here comes the weird problem its like as soon as you tr to get into some folders on the drive everything freezes up. Soon as you disconnect the drive everything starts to pop up. Its like for the first 5 seconds of boot up the HDD is fine, and then after that its like it freezes itself. I can hear the disk spinning inside as well. Just confused why i cant access it or any recovery program cant access it aswell ( when they try it just freezes the program too) Please help guys i dont want to lose everything ! :)

It's probably too late unless you use a recovery service. If you are going to do that, don't do anything else with this drive. Don't even power it up. The more you do the more you are likely to damage it and the more it will cost to recover it.

It sounds like it has a physically corrupted file system, i.e. it recognizes the root but none of the subfolders off of the root because there is physical damage on the drive.

The following arfticle doesn't' name names but Seagate is not known for its consumer drive longevity.

Has the machine been running hot? You might just be having a circuit board problem rather than physical internal damage. I don't know, however, how you would find exactly the same circuit board again other than buying another exactly matched drive and if it's been 1 1/2 years you probably won't find one. The recovery services might have something but they are expensive.

You might try putting it in the freezer for a while and see if it improves your ability to read the drive. If so, copy it pretty quickly. You might want to do it in segments. Identify the most important root folders and copy one. Then cool it again and copy the next one. I've heard that works but have never had to try it. It seems, though, that it might work on a marginal drive.

Nope machine is running fine, i had the hard drive on for awhile and it hasnt gotten really hot, ( can touch with your hands and its just warm). I know the HDD is garbage i just care more about getting the stuff off of it.

If its a system drive try to connect it to another computer/laptop and then try to download and install > SeaTools for Windows < to check and fix errors for that drive.

Keep us posted with the results.

Ive tried that today, it passes the Drive short test but fails both long and generic test. when i hook it up it says the drive has erros and asks to scan and fix, i try that but it just goes on and on forever not accomplishing anything

ive tried doing the chkdsk today and it found some stuff and fixed it but then when it went to verify stuff it froze up again. its like if i access it quickly then im able to get some data off, if i wait more than 10 seconds then its like it shuts itself off but it keeps spinning?

Obviously the signs would tell you that your drive is about to fail, best thing you could do is image your drive to a healthy drive for you to take of your important data from the image you got. You could use ddrescue in Linux to image your drive.

This guide might help you with the procedure : http://www.technibble.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48269
