Can u have too much power.

Well I need to know what to do about my psu because I looked up a calculator and it says 589 and my friends said get a 750w but my teacher says if i can go 100w above or then it will have too much power.

it depends on the efficiency curve of the make and model of psu you buy. some only hit there efficiency rating at around 50%+ load which is typical for older 80+ bronze psu's while 80+ platinum rated psu's tend to have a broader efficiency envelope that can start as low as 20% load.
i certainly wouldn't waste money on a 1000 80+ bronze if i could get away with a 750w platinum for the same price on a 1 card build.
as the 1000 w will likely just hit its 80+ rating while the 750w would likely be hitting 90+ due to being deeper into its efficiency curve.
but it really does depend on the quality of the psu...

This is untrue. You cannot have too much power. You system will only draw as much power as it needs, no more. A 750w or even an 1000w supply would still be safe.
 
a power supply will only deliver the amount of power a system requires. but if you buy a high wattage psu, and you are only using a small amount of power, it will ruin the power supply's efficiency, and down the road when you need more power from your psu, it wont be there. if your system uses 589w, a 750w (quality) power supply should suit your needs fine.
