I'm looking to buy an external HDD but i'm confused between Seagate brand and Western Digital. These are the choices available. Which one do you think is better?

1) WD 500GB Elements 3.0
2) Seagate GoFlex 750GB 2.0 5400rpm
3) Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable USB 3.0
4) WD 1TB Elements Portable USB 3.0
5) Western Digital 1TB My PassPort Ultra USB 3.0

Regardless of the capacity, which one is better?

Brand itself doesn't matter. WD, Seagate, and Toshiba all make good drives. Third party makers package them in good packages as well. However, there are some products and features that are best avoided unless you need them. Reliability and performance are all in effect identical.

The largest of these is hardware level encryption. You don't need to lock the drive, yet it automatically scrambles the data for you. In other words, when your drive's control board or USB connector or something breaks, you cannot just take out the bare drive, connect it via SATA or something and browse your data.

WD Essential and Seagate Backup plus I think use it, I'm not sure of the others.

Software encryption is fine, as long as you disable it.

So which...

So which would I buy? IDK, up to you in the end. Which case feels the most solid, provides all the features that you need, doesn't provide the features that you don't want, AND has a good price? You are the best to decide that.
