Hi, I am upgrading from the asus h61m-a/usb3 to another board the asus P8Q77-M/CSM, or ps277m pro it's the same socket, for the cpu, so if i boot up all the same hardware, cpu, ram hdd, graphics card, into win 8, will all hell break loose? If so is there a way to back up my data ( don't worry i have a 500gig external hdd) to that and after installing windows I can restore to that backup?

Solution
Win8 isn't quite as good as Win7 at it, but more often than not, can install the HD in a new rig and it will configure itself to work with the new hardware, once up and running, then want to update the latest mobo drivers from the mobo website, run a registry cleaner to clear out the old entries that no longer pertain and prob have to reactivate Win, which is no big deal, I've even had luck moving from AMD to Intel and vice-versa, but it's easiest from Intel to Intel
It's possible to move your HDD and other hardware to new motherboard without a problem but I would make a backup and after try to move hardware, just make sure that you install all drivers for your motherboard and other components after moving :)

Edit: You should be able to move HDD without Windows reinstalling.

Thanks, but not to annoy you , that leads me to many more questions! So you are saying i can just plop all my old hardware into the p8z77 pro and boot up to windows 8.1 on my hdd? Or are you saying that I make a backup(How do i make a backup in windows 8 ?) and i do fresh install to the new mobo, and then when i am in windows i select a restore option?

You want to make fresh install of the Windows 8.1 with new motherboard?
You can use "Windows Easy Transfer" program to transfer all your files to new OS

So there is a way to carry windows over to a mobo with a new chipset and cpu? Tell me your secrets!

Thanks for the advise, I have another question, I am getting a 250 gig ssd and my reasons are 1: Speed! 2: They last longer than hdds. Is number two true? I mean, if my hdd fails, it's not devastating because i will install all my games to the hdd ( To my knowledge the most performance boost in gaming you can get out of an ssd is 3 more fps max) and I can just get a new drive and re install steam. I want to put my os (which i will) onto the ssd so I won't lose my os and most important applications for awhile. So is it true than an ssd will probably outlive and hdd? Also, I have heard to NEVER defrag an ssd. Is that true?
