forcing a 4:3 monitor to letter box?

I have a cruddy Sony 4:3 monitor. Anyway i can make it letterbox so i can use widescreen resolutions? Thank you very much in advance. It would really help me if i could figure this stuff out.

In your graphics card's control panel there is a scaling option to stretch to fit or maintain aspect ratio.

where is this scaling option? i know how to open the nvidia control panel but where is the option? how do i letterbox and keep it on the screen

Display > adjust desktop size and position. Your monitor could also have a scaling option that is affecting it.

Pretty sure that won't actually increase your resolution though, it will just make it look letterboxed.

Resolution is how many pixels per inch (or whatever) you're displaying, so if your monitor can't display more than a 1200x1080 making it 1200x880 won't acttually improve things.
