Zero previous upgrading experience. Looking to upgrade my graphics card. What should i be aware of? Do i need to upgrade other aspects of my rig to support a more powerful graphics card? Looking for a card powerful enough that i won't have to upgrade for a few years. Budget for a card is maxed at $300.

Current Rig
AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
12 GB ram
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 @ 3.40GHz

Solution
Your RAM and CPU are still good for gaming. For the amount you have to spend ($300 or less), an R9 280 would be best. An R9 280X would push the cost up to a minimum of $310, so I didn't recommend that instead. I'd recommend an Nvidia card, but since you have an AMD card now, you wouldn't miss the extra effects Nvidia supports.

I have your same processor and actually started off with a 6850... very similar to yourself. The CPU is good, each GPU will feel like a new computer, for example: I went from a 6850 to a gtx670 and easily double my frames per second on any game, then got a gtx 780ti a few months ago and got another huge jump in performance. You don't need a 780ti if you don't want to max out new games, I would put budget up a little more because I have seen reference 290's for $350! If not a OC'd 280x/770 will more than double your FPS. A stock 290 will kill any 770/280x though for just a few more bucks.

Thanks for the quick response! I will probably end up increasing my budget to $400, as id rather not have to upgrade again anytime soon.
