does having a 80 plus bronze, silver, gold and platinum power supplies help reduce electicity bill?

Solution
I disagree with mickypheonix. I you have a system and the PC components are consuming lets say 300 watts the amount drawn from the wall is dependent on how efficient the psu is

80% efficiency 300w/.80= 375w at the wall
92% efficiency 300w/.92= 326w at the wall

The more efficient the cheaper to run.

Nothing? So for example, if the system draws 500W from the PSU, the power draw from the wall is 625W with 80% efficiency and 556W with 90% efficiency. I wouldn't call that difference nothing.

Hi
Yes a higher efficiency power supply would reduce your electricity bill but only in comparison to a less efficient one.
An 80% power supply that is supplying 200 Watt to a computer would be drawing 240 Watt from the wall,a 90% power supply that is supplying 200 Watt would be drawing 220 Watt from the wall so the saving in this case is 20Watts.

It depends on how much you use the system. If you are running the system under load 24x7 a higher efficiency PSU will definitely reduce electricity bills. But if you use like 1 hour per day, then the savings are going to be negligible.

Heavy workers may still see an advantage from an upgrade; the Thermaltake 1275 XT Platinum will save from $19.57 to $29.38 a year. The smaller 750W upgrade is worth $6 to $9.

considering the cost difference between 80+ and 80+ platinum and its really only for idle lab condition. the 10% saving in electricity consumption would not translate to a lot of money saved. (especially if you also have fixed electricity cost per day like we have here).

I would stick with a 80+ bonze psu just for quality.

Bronze is fine if a gold one isn't on sale, but in the end, turning off the computer and/or turning off the surge protector overnight saves the most money.

Sleep helps the mind and body function efficiently ;) (I had to correct help to helps and funtion to function since I am sleep deprived) >.<

625 W and 556 W have a huge difference

but the platinum draw less power even in full load, in idle it has a slight difference but in full load it has a huge difference but platinum's cost is expensive

i guess i just have to pick platinum even if it is not modular..but i like the modular one cause i can have better cable management

good features but the platinum is a bit more expensive but i don't care cause the components made for that psu is high quality but i still have trouble getting the silver, gold and platinum cause it is not quite affordable for me well i guess i have to save money and get the platinum one in the future
