I think I understand the difference between the hard drive colors.

My question is this. What would happen if I use a Red drive for storage?

It looks like newegg is running a deal with a 3tb red costing the same as a green.

With an extra year waranty and same price, is it ok to get the red for storage?

Sorry, don't know why this went into motherboard. I will ask in the storage category

You can use a Red drive, it's fine. The Green is the budget drive 'optimised' for low power use, but in reality it's just their entry level cheap drive.
Their Red drives aren't a lot faster than Greens, but they have a few customisations that make them behave better in NAS environments and are designed to run 24x7. You can run either just fine in a desktop.
