MSI Afterburner causes instability?

I have an HD 6850 and I can OC it via the CCC to 900 MHz without breaking a sweat. Everything runs fine .
But when I OC via MSI Afterburner, even if I keep the MHZ under 800, ( the stock is 775) I still get massive instability . I ahve to restart my system to get things back to normal. Why is that?

I agree with u, i have the exact same problem, using stock clocks, no overclock. Something is wrong with msi afterburner.i used it for checking framerates and was getting unstable fps without even overclocking yet. So i thought maybe limit framerate to a lower #. Problem still persisted. I ended up uninstalling msi afterburner and metroLL and my other games don't stutter anymore. Alot of times it is software related for unstable...

No. It's not it. I dont experience the instability when a start a game or something. The very second I OC using Afterburner, no matter how much I raise the clocks, with no program but MSI Afterburner and GPU Z open, I get massive screen "problems" . The instant I press apply. There is no time for the temps to rise, and even if there were, as I stated before, using CCC I can OC to 900 MHz without a problem. If I raise the clocks from 775 to 776 in MSI AB , BOOM!

I have been running at 900 MHz for almost a year now. No temp problems, no instability, no tearing, nothing. The insant I mess with the clocks on MSI AB, everything goes to hell. And, even if Ireset the clocks, the problem remains.

It would jump from 60 then to 40 then to 50 back to 60. It was not dropping normal.have u found a good program that is good for overclocking gpu that doesn't cause frame stutter
