I'm trying to restore Windows 7 on my machine from a usb mounted ISO. When I try to start it up in safemode, start-up stalls on disk.sys load. When I try to boot from the usb ISO, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. Is there a way, without being able to boot in safemode and without access to cmd, to completely wipe the windows partition and reinstall from the usb ISO? It's a Gateway dx4300, 2.6 AMD processor.

Make sure your USB is suitable for OS Install, many large ones (> 64 GB) for example will not work to install BIOSs or OS from ISO. This is the method I found easiest.

1. Download and install WinISO Standard 6.3.0.5036. Follow directions below and save to HD.

2. Download and install Rufus. Follow directions at Sevenforums link with these settings:
-MBR Partition Scheme for UEFI computer
-FAT32
-4096 byte cluster size
-Quick Format
-Create Bootable disk using ISO image made w/ WinISO

It sounds like your usb is corrupt. Are you working with a licensed copy? If so try a fresh download. If not, it is the forum policy not to offer help for illegal activities. You could also create a system disk using any of the many Linex based configurations. All of them offer a disk format feature. Lastly many companies like Gateway embed proprietary information required by their bios in the version of Windows they provide. Have you tried usinf the media provided by Gateway?

Yes, it's a liscensed copy. I just don't have a working optical drive.

I'm mounting the ISO from a Mac, which doesn't have an optical drive, using Boot Camp Assistant - which, as far as I can tell, is mounting the ISO properly. It's a 4GB stick, so size shouldn't be an issue.

To clarify for any future replies on this thread: optical drives are not an option. The only working machine I have is a newer iMac, and the PC I'm trying to restore Windows on doesn't have a working optical drive. So my restore CD isn't going to work. I have a 4GB usb stick, a liscense key, and a modest amount of hope and optimism...

I made the ISO last time using a DVD and the optical drive on my laptop.....put it on HD and then copied to the USB. In past instances I have used a machine at work or a friends house or borrowed an external \ optical.

Does this help ?
