Vista or XP? Should I revert back to original operating system for support? When Dell D630 was new, I reverted back to XP rather than using the Vista operating system installed on the machine. Now that support has ended should I revert operating system back to Vista as a microsoft supported system?

Advising someone who's unemployed to buy even a used PC is not being very realistic at all.

XP is still loved and used by thousands of people worldwide, and by the time it got to SP3 it was stable and reliable, plus it's RAM requirements were very modest, unlike Vista that followed it (and that wasn't Vista's only problem by a long way).

Ditch Vista and use XP my friend. Don't worry about Microsoft no longer supporting it. Just ensure you've got a good antivirus installed, keep the Windows firewall on at all times and you'll be fine.

Running an old OS could become a problem if you buy any new software or hardware, but you're unlikely to be doing that if you have no job I expect. Enjoy Windows XP and remember you can get all the...

I always hated XP, even when it was new. And Vista was junk too. Toss that PC in the ewaste and get something with 7; if you have no job look at used PC's.

I don't know how people can use old machines. Those were the "dark days" of computing. You just torturing yourself.

Well I have to disagree. XP is a wonderful OS. Low on resources and fast. Just get a good anti virus program (I like Avast) and download Malwarebytes Anti Malware and run regular scans and you will be fine. Vista is the biggest piece of junk out there.

Thanks. I get a pop up on the end of support for the XP frequently. I really don't want to chase down new versions of the software i use for a newer operating system.

add more ram (2gb or more) and get vista back but update it first before using anything so you won't get problems
vista is a good OS

"the other versions are used more"
yes that's true
I admit that vista RTM version was buggy but MS fixed it after 2 service packs and some patchs
remember that XP was similar to vista ...it sucked at the RTM and got fixed after few service packs
windows 7 had few security issues at RTM then was fixed with SP1
it's Microsoft's routine to release a buggy OS then fix it later with patchs and service packs

My opinion...

I cant stand using XP. Feels like i'm in 2003 or something.

Vista is definitely more resource intensive, but:

A) It's still supported
B) It looks GOOD

The Dell D630 is a pretty powerful laptop in it's day, so I would say use Vista. No need to worry about not having support, and your whole experience will be more modern and good-looking.

Hope that helps!
