Hi, Yesterday I received my new R9 290. Put it in my computer per the instructions, installed the drivers from the included DVD. I ran some games and also a few benchmarks (Unigine Heaven and 3dMark 11). Everything worked fine.

I installed Trixx in order to set the fan profile to custom. Then I downloaded the new Catalyst 14.4 drivers from AMD. Installed them and things seemed stable. Went through the process again, ran a few games and then the benchmarks. When I shut down Unigine Heaven, I got my first black screen.

I noticed that after I rebooted, it could sit at the login screen for however long...but as soon as I logged in, black screen. I removed the card, hooked my dvi cable up to my Motherboard's onboard VGA and booted back into windows. I used the add/remove programs button to uninstall all AMD drivers, shut down, reinstalled the card and went back through the process. Everything works fine until I install the 14.4 drivers.

I finally grabbed the AMD Driver Cleanup Utility from AMD, ran that, reinstalled 14.4...everything SEEMED to work then...but anytime I run anything but 2d (desktop) stuff, I get horizontal artifacts all over the screen, even when I shut games down and go back to the desktop. So, I am currently running the "stock" drivers that come on the DVD, but I am concerned that my new GPU has issues, since it won't run 14.4.

Any ideas? Thanks

So, I think I fixed it with the help of a user on the AMD forums (user: Stumped). I thought I'd pass this along to any other folks with 14.4 driver problems:

1. Do ALL Windows updates, even the ones that aren't critical or important
2. Follow these steps to cleanly uninstall AMD drivers: Clean uninstall
NOTE: AMD created a "driver removal tool" (why?!), but anyhow, some users report that it doesn't work 100%. Just use the instructions in that link.
3. If you're having problems, DO NOT UPGRADE, uninstall everything per the instructions and install 14.4 clean, from scratch
4. Uncheck 'surface format optimization' in the CCC..that is for compatibility with older games and has caused issues you are describing. Also select...
