Second disk drive stop working, what to do?

hello,

My computer has 2 drives: one that has the operating system ( windows 7 ) and the second just for more storage.
My second drive has just died and breathed it's last so to speak and even if I get a new drive to replace it windows still thinks all those programs are still installed. what should I do?

You can uninstall them via the control panel. Those are mostly remnants of the drive directory, you can also delete them manually in the program files folder.

If the applications are unable to uninstall then, just manually delete them.

Let me understand this correctly. You have the OS on the "C" drive; that part is clear.

Do you have other programs installed on the second drive? If so, you can make a clone of the second drive and insert in place of the faulty drive.

If this is not the case, you can connect the new drive and use it as you did previously.

Yes, there are some programs that are on the C drive ( which is working ) but some programs were on the D drive ( which is dead now and removed from the computer ) and Unfortunately it's to late to clone. So I suppose after getting a replacement drive is to click on all those programs in the control panel that were on the D drive like Plaintuts mentioned and see if I get a message that asks me if I want to remove the program from the list sense it can't find the program in the first place then install the program in the new drive. Although I don't remember which program was on the D drive so I guess I should click on every single program in the list.

Yes that will work. And another important thing is regular and frequent backups to an external disk.

Replace the drive and re-install the missing programs. Any missing data/files will need to be restored from your backups naturally.

Alright, thanks everyone. Turns out that I can get the hard drive running again just enough time to get some files out by putting it in the freezer for 30mins then plugging it in the computer immediately before it warms up and dies again. I have no idea why that works, lol. Thought I might share in case this helps other people.
