I originally intended to go with the AMD Athlon X4 760k, however I was wondering if there is a better Processor I could buy which is similar or slightly above in price - Processor must be FM2 (socket type)

I plan on using it for gaming as I will be using an Nvidia Geforce GTX 750Ti for graphics.

Thanks in advance.

If it must be FM2, the 760k is the best you are really going to get.

Well the motherboard I was planning on buying is FM2 based, but I am only at the planning stage, so I am willing to deviate from FM2 now that I have taken greater thought into it, if you have any suggestions. Thanks for the response

What is your budget for this system? FM2 is a dead end, so I cannot recommend going with one.

I'm willing to spend around £150 on the CPU and Motherboard in total. Possibly a little more.

Thanks for the recommendation. I don't suppose there is a CPU by AMD which is of a similar price range but more powerful.

AMD is a dead end at the moment as AM3+ will not see any newer CPU's, and the FM2+ platform is not a high end desktop platform. The 7850k, for example, on the cpu side, is only about as powerful as a Phenom II X4 965 clock for clock. By going with Intel and a H97 or Z97 board, you get support for broadwell when it is released. You will just need a bios update. FX 6300 is an i3's direct competition, but needs to be overclocked well to solidly compete across the board, and that costs more.

Is it a FM2 or FM2+? if it is the FM2+ than you have upgrade options and a 760K now is fine for a Mid range gaming PC. The Athlon II 760K very close the FX4350 in performance and has the same architecture...AMD has made it know that they have CPU optimization for BF4.. A MB with an FM2+ socket or FM2+/FM2 socket with the Bolton 88 chipset (D4 is newer) Something like this maybe http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681... way you can put an Kaveri APU in if you want later. The advantages of Kaveri are not only the onboard graphics but the HSA type of architecture has yet to "flex", so to speak as the types of applications that would benefit are few and in between now. As System Memory Gets Faster so will the APU.

Thanks a lot, I may actually end up going for the core i5 over the i3
