I have been recording my game play footage on PC using my Elgato HD PVR for quite some time. I have always had an issue getting it to record right, my inexperience with software and hardware forcing me to limp through trial and error and getting it to work eventually. However, i just purchased an Astro A40 gaming headset, which uses optical audio instead of the regular audio ports like my previous headset. This is where I have run into my issue. I can record my mic-in audio but I cant figure out how to get my game sounds to record as well. PC Specs below.

TL;DR: Bought an Astro A40 and cant figure out how to record game sounds and mic-in sounds with my Elgato. PC Specs below.

OS: Windows 8 64 Bit
CPU: i7-3770k
MoBo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaw X Series 16GB
Storage: Seagate 3TB
GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 600 2GB
PSU: Raidmax 730W Semi-Modulary ATX

In the playback menu it pops up as "Realtek Digital Output" which is what I used before without any problems. For some reason just switching my headset from going to the regular audio jacks to optical audio has caused this problem. I didnt change any settings, I just plugged the new headset in.

If the A40s aren't popping up in the playback or recording devices then there is something wrong with the connection.

If the headset is connected via the front panel ports, try the back of the computer, that solves 90% of the problems. If that still doesn't work that pretty much means either the motherboard's ports are faulty or the A40s are faulty.

Realtek Digital Output usually means either integrated speakers or the connected default speakers.

I have always had the A40s (and all my other headsets) plugged directly into the motherboard. The Realtek Digital Output it what ive always had as the default device to use headsets, and also the A40. The A40 works perfectly, my issue i just need to find the settings i need to change or what i need to do to make it so that my Elgato also captures what I'm hearing on top of what I'm saying.

Ohh okay. For that you might have to record your voice using something like Audacity and then edit it into the recorded gameplay. I don't think Elgatos are made to record the voice too.
