This is my first building a PC and I would like to do it right. I'd like to start off saying that I will be mainly using this computer for gaming and I'd like to keep my budget a bit below $1400. That said I'll list the parts I picked out. If there are any compatibility issues or better options please point it out.
PARTS
I already have the GPU and HDD because I got them on a sale. I have no preferences for fashion, I just want to get the best my money can buy under that budget

Solution
You should get the i5 4670K and Z97.

Well, since this is my first build I don't think I consider myself die-hard for it (at least not yet), but another other thing I was worried was if the cooler and the psu won't fit properly. I'm not exactly sure how far the cooler sticks out. I don't think it's a problem, but I'd rather be safe than sorry after I buy it. Are PSU's sizes standardized to one size for atx boards?

No they aren't bad. I built my system nearly two years ago with that CPU for example. It just isn't the latest technology. As parts get old it is harder to find replacement parts in general. It's not all bad though. I chose to use Win 7 Pro instead of Win 8.

Do you know if there have been issues with Windows 8.1 with the parts I selected? You don't have to point out each single part, I can look them up myself. I just want to know what might happen if I go with this build. I'm not worried about having the latest tech. I just need to get what I'm paying for under my budget. I'm going to go out on a limb on saying that anything you guys suggest will be better than the toaster I plugged a keyboard in.

The Z97 is lga1150, and the z77 is the lga1155, and the new intel cpu will fit into the Z97 that is why you need the new Z97 mb if you want to upgrade to the new cpu later.

And your 212evo will fit all the MB as long as the PSU, yes, the atx PSU is standard for the mid ATX case.
