Laptop keyboard stuck in command mode and Windows not working properly.

Since a couple of days ago, the keyboard on my laptop has started to occasionally get stuck in what appears to be command mode. Trying to type anything results in commands being opened, eg, pressing 'h' opens my search history in Firefox as opposed to actually typing 'h'. It doesn't appear to be an issue with the keyboard, as I connected a USB keyboard to the laptop and the same thing happened.

In addition to this, when the keyboard is in this mode, the laptop is hard to use in general. Clicking on a tab in the Windows bar at the bottom of the screen to open a programme or webpage does nothing. The tab gets pressed but doesn't open the page. I have to click the minimise button on a webpage to minimise it, and have no way of opening it again as clicking its tab does nothing.

When the keyboard is working, which it does on occasion, there are a few keys that don't work. I can get the laptop working again by messing around in the keyboard settings (not actually doing or changing anything, just clicking around in the settings), or by locking and then unlocking the computer again. I have thus far been unable to open the onscreen keyboard at all when the laptop is in this mode.

I have tried running a Malware scan, a virus scan, doing a system restore to last week when it was working fine, doing a scan through the cmd programme, and checking the keyboard settings. Nothing has helped at all. In addition, the laptop will not complete a scandisk. It starts up, says a scandisk was scheduled, and then straight away says that the scandisk was cancelled and proceeds to start up the laptop.

The laptop is a Toshiba that is almost 6 years old and running Window's Vista. Any help or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I tried that a while ago at the suggestion of my dad. Didn't seem to help sadly. He also did a few more things with it that I'm not sure of. I'll ask him tomorrow and add it to the discussion.
Thanks!

That seems to work briefly and the laptop will work properly for a little while and then goes back to the same problem again. Earlier today, I also got a blue screen message randomly while the laptop was working fine with the message BAD_POOL_HEADER.

I tried that too I'm afraid. It didn't find anything. Thanks :)
