Hello,

My laptop mobo is dead. I have ordered components on building a desktop with a 120GB SSD.

I've read you can connect the 2.5 inch SATA drive (my old laptop HDD) via desktop SATA power cable or PSU cables or something but will I have to reformat the drive?

Also, if I can choose not to reformat, will I still be able to install and run programs and applications with the 2.5" HDD. Eventually I want to reformat it for optimal performance right? (or at least delete old laptop OS files and system files)

I want to at least recover the old laptop HDD data anyway.

Other people (like BestBuy GS) were saying as a secondary drive it may not be compatible like the drivers or something, the old OS may not work or something, might not be compatible with new motherboard, saying probably shouldn't do it.

What do you think.

Thanks for any help!

You will not need to reformat. Just check what size drives your case supports. That's all that matters. I have a 256GB SSD that has Windows and many games on it that I carry around and depending on where i am, I plug it into a laptop or my desktop.
