Custom Build - Where did I go wrong?

When i first got into computers, I read about hardware in magazines etc. Then I discovered Linux. I stopped studying hardware. Over the last six months I bought, what I thought, good components to build a Linux Workstation for editing and rendering video/audio. Since I haven't been paying attention to hardware since 2000, I quickly browsed Tigerdirect and Newegg for parts, hoping that the reviews would help me make a learned decision. Big mistake. It's up and running, but it ain't to fast. Especially compared to my laptop, and a older PC. I've tried to tweak it in Linux with preload, and swappiness, etc, but it doesn't perform well. Thinking it's my distro, I tried others. I settled on Manjaro. It's okay. After trying different distros and tweaking it, I'm sure its the hardware. What mistakes did I make? Should I sell it and start from scratch, even though I won't get what I invested in back? I feel like an idiot and I'm not sure what to do. Here's the specs if it helps.

Note: It's all supported for overclocking by the motherboard and cpu. But I haven't played with that.

Am I right that I didn't see a dedicated graphics card in there? I'm not familiar with Linux, but I do read the hardware forums every day, and am fairly versed with windows. You're better off listing your components as such:

If your processor and motherboard are the ones I listed, they're not high end at all. What you bought would be better suited to a home office machine than gaming/editing.

These are entry level components , and performance will be proportionate to the money you spent .

For editting your choke point is the lack of RAM , and that it is in single channel . You should add a second 4 gig stick of RAM as soon as you can . Make sure its configured in dual channel .
And make sure you are using a 64 bit distro

My post isn't solved, I'm not sure how to remove that on my post. Around 400 all together, incuding the wifi and cam and harddrive. Maybe a bit more. I can't return them because I bought them last year. For cooling, it's the stock heatsync and fan that came with the cpu. I haven't attempted to overclock because of this.

After trying to tweak everything in Linux I did learn something about hardware compatibility on Linux, especially when it comes to drivers. Intel seems to be the best supported. Too bad they work with the NSA :p ! Kidding aside, if I build again, I'm sticking with Intel. I didn't know that Intel makes video cards...

You can still use the motherboard, the AM3+ chips get nice. You can pick up an 8320 for like 150USD at the egg, maybe even cheaper if you shop around. For cooling get at least a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo. Not sure if that motherboard overclocks or not, but at least you'll be ready to. For a video card, I'd get at least a 280x, it's a very popular card, and I'm sure there are drivers for Linux for it. Other than that, beef up the RAM, you want two sticks running in dual channel mode. To prevent errors as best you can, order a dual channel kit, that assures that the memory will play nice with itself. Get a decent PSU, I can't stress this enough, you can skimp everywhere but the PSU. You can get a nice XFX 600W for like 50$. That'll cover you for a long time. Use the old parts to build something nice for your parents, the parts used aren't worth all that much, well, memory tends to hold value pretty well...
 



He is not gaming . An R9 280X is not an appropriate card for this build .
Something along the lines of a radeon 6450 , or similarly priced nVidia card would free some RAM and help with video playback . Nothing more than that is going to be useful

The raidmax psu is not going to be ideal . A corsair CX 430 would more than handle the build , and is often under $30




Installing an FX8320 is a good idea if the additional RAM doesnt lift performance to acceptable levels . Just check the mb's cpu support list first . It may be limited to 95 watt processors . If thats the case an FX 6300 will still give a 50% boost in performance compared to the 4300

For all my computers/laptops I use eOS Luna which is based on Ubuntu 12.04. It runs nice, and is simple to use. My family all use it, but they're not power users. I tried Ubuntu 14.04 with the Gnome desktop, and Unity. I also tried Makulu Linux, and it's considerably faster than Ubuntu, but buggy. The problem with Makulu is that it doesn't have many developers. I tried Sabayon, but it's full of bloat. Manjaro is best of all mentioned. I use the 64bit version if it's supported by the hardware, so that's not the problem. All except Makulu have a choice to use 64bit.

I'm not using much ram or cpu according to my conky. Still, maybe it's because I'm not using dual channel memory, as pointed out earlier.

I didn't answer earlier, but I'm using the onboard videocard. It's connected by VGA. I don't have hdmi or dvi to connect on the motherboard. If I would have payed more attention to the motherboard specs, and not the reviews, I wouldn't have purchased a mobo without hdmi!

Could it be the harddrive? It is used...

The motherboard is built to support overclocking, and the processor is unlocked. I haven't tried to overclock because I'm using stock cooling.

My PSU is used. It's not what I wanted, but my friend convinced me to use it anyways. Do you think this can effect performance?

If I buy a pair, I think I could sell the ram I already have. It's ballistics? ram.

I'm thinking of maybe re-purposing it as an htpc.

A 50% boost in performance would be great, but what am I going to do with the CPU I have now. Aren't people cautious about buying a used processor?

Does Nvidia have conflicts with AMD mobo's since they own ATI?
