I wanted to manage the external HD to store data, without using the Time Machine, since I already have another one for that. So I have just files, no aplications saved, and still I can only read the HD on my MAC but when I need to check it from a Windows computer, it recognizes it is there, but it seems it doesn't have the drivers for Windows. What options do I have so it can be recognized on both OS?

It's not a driver issue as the driver is built in to Windows. It's a partition-type issue, Windows doesn't natively support Mac partitions. It needs the help of third-party software such as the free HFSExplorer: http://www.catacombae.org/hfsx.html

re-connect it it back to the Mac. Copy all the files off of it. Reformat it as exFat. Copy the files back onto it.

exFat is compatible with both Mac and Windows (unless you have really old versions of the OS)
