External HDD keeps disconnecting

I've tried disabling the power-saving options in both device manager and energy saving options in control panel.

The problem so far only seems to happen in an HP Envy 7 Notebook PC, using Windows 8.

Where can I get some USB driver updates? Will they work at all?

As far as I can tell the HDD uses up 1A. I tried disconnecting all other USB devices and simulating the problem by transferring a great number of files and everything went smooth, which drives me (no pun intended) to the conclusion that the devices are stealing energy from each other.

Is there a workaround for this? The person with this problem uses a USB-connected mouse and a pen drive simoultaneously, is there any way to keep using all these without having the disk disconnecting during transfers?

EDIT: @Phillip If that is indeed the only solution then thank you very much. It's all I wanted to know. I don't suppose there is a way to do something along the lines of defining one USB port as the prioritized energy consumer so that it does not disconnect during transfers while momentarily disabling other devices?
