Is my GPU or PSU bad?

Hello, just recently I have been experiencing some freezing/crashing problems with my gaming computer which I built myself in April, which involved me adding a new power supply (Corsair CX750M) and a new graphics card (Sapphire Toxic R9 280X).

I have removed the graphics card and using the integrated graphics on my i7 Processor, and I am experiencing no freezing or crashing issues, so I have narrowed the problem down to either the power supply or the graphics card to the source of the problem.

Is there any way that I can test which is causing this? I don't have another graphics card or another power supply to switch in to test.

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you,
SmelliotButton

The problem shouldn't be from the video card. It's a 280X, and it can handle every game at Ultra.

So should I send my current PSU back to Corsair, or should I buy another one first?

Thanks for your reply

If you underclock the R9 280X, does it still cause freezing and crashing?

I haven't tried to underclock it.
When I underclock, do I have to edit the voltage?

No, just reduce the clock speed to 1000MHz which is the speed of a 7970 GHZ edition. If it is stable then RMA the gpu.

I'll do it as soon as I can.
Couldn't it still be the PSU if the GPU works fine at a lower speed? Because less power would be needed?

I'm confused, haha

Well a R9 280X is a rebrand of a 7970 GHZ edition but it is slightly overclocked higher at 1110MHZ for the R9 280X toxic. There can be unstable R9 280X cards.
Whilst the power supply you got isn't great. It should be enough unless it is a faulty unit.

Right, so I'm getting really quite annoyed with this now.
I recently did a factory restore, which obviously removed the 14.4 driver for my graphics card.
And, as my PC constantly crashes, I cannot install it again because it ends up crashing halfway through the installation.
I tried to underclock the graphics card using Sapphire Trixx, but, probably because I do not have the drivers for the card, I cannot edit any of the settings.

Do you know how I can get round this?

Unplug the gpu from your setup and install using the integrated graphics

I have done that, but it won't install the drivers correctly as it does not pick the graphics card up because it's not physically in the setup

Then if the pc is crashing when using the gpu when doing basic stuff on the pc, RMA the gpu.

Ok, thanks for your help.

I'll RMA it back to Amazon and get another - I'll let you know what happens after I've installed it
Thanks again,

Well, I've had it running for about 4-5 hours, and I haven't experienced any crashing!
So, I can say that the problem has been fixed.

Thanks for everyone's help!
