Do you have any additional media plugged into your machine? Remove it if so. Also are the windows updates the first things you are installing. Furthermore is your copy of Window legit?

Try performing a clean boot and then update Windows incase something else is interfering.
You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot.

Follow the following steps to perform a clean boot:

Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility.
On the General tab, click the Selective startup option, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box...

On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
Click OK, and then click Restart.
Next log into administrator account again and run windows update.

Failing this you will need to do another clean install and make sure windows update is the first thing you install. Another tip is to reduce the quantity of updates that occur. This may help reduce any load issues/interference though windows updates rarely fall foul of this.

Hope this helps :)
