My relative has a problem with her Acer Windows 8 desktop computer. Today when she switched it on and when it got onto the windows 8 password screen a problem occurred. As she described it, the password field won't open up as in she cannot type anything into the field. So because of this she cannot sign into her computer, it is the only windows account on that computer. She has multiple times shut the computer off and tried again even taking the plug off from the socket. She said her mouse moves around just fine and the usual icons on the password screen are there. Also she can't shut the computer off through the menu but rather has to hold the power button as the menus don't seem to respond and this is why she can't use the 'shift' key to get into advanced options while pressing restart/shutdown as she can't get to the shutdown options.

How can she go around this?

Solution

Need a Recovery drive...
Create Recovery
If you don't have a Recovery/Installation disk get a friend running Windows 8/8.1 to create a Recovery Drive at the very least. Ensure their Installation is the same (Both 32 or64 bit). You'll need a blank CD (Win 8) or a small (1Gb) USB Pendrive. Simply type 'Create' at your Start Screen. Choose Create Recovery Drive from Settings (Win 8) or from list (win 8.1).
CD can only be created in Windows 8 using Windows 7 File Recovery.
Leave the box unchecked for the Recovery Partition.
Get into BIOS (Setup) and make USB Drive or Optical Drive 1st choice in the Boot menu, and boot from the Recovery Drive/Disk. Proceed via Troubleshoot to Advanced Options and first try System Restore to a point prior to your problem arising
