Do I lose anything by going for the ASUS Z97-A instead of the Z87-A?

Hi all,

I'm setting up my first PC build and was looking towards getting the ASUS Z87-A because I've only heard positive things about it and it seems to be one of the most solid motherboards out there.

I realize now that the ASUS Z97-A is out and only about $15 more expensive, and it seems to only be better but honestly I just can't seem to understand the motherboard lingo no matter how much I read into it, so I'm wondering if I'm losing anything by going for the Z97-A instead of the Z87-A?

Will the 97 have a greater chance to bug out for example because it's relatively new? Are there any missing features? Or is it simply the better buy?

I've tried solving this myself through just reading but couldn't, and I know Tom'sHardware always has great feedback/advice so thanks in advance for any help!

Depends on how you look at it, you lose the a couple of SATA III ports replaced by a SATA express and a M.2 socket, and all the yellow on the mobo ;) , that's about the only thing I can think of off hand

The Z97 would be the long term better buy, it supports the Haswell, Haswell refresh CPUs and will support the upcoming Broadwell CPUs upon there release, it also OCs better,, handles DRAM better and has better thermal controls (and also improved BIOS)

Hey Tradesman1 thanks for your answer, I've seen your replies around these forums a lot so I can tell you've got some solid experience too :)

So the Z97 is a definite upgrade, but is it better in every way or are there some features that I might be missing out on from the Z87 if I get the Z97?
