Okay guys. I love all the help you send out to us geeks in troubled times, I could use some of that love right about now. I'm new to posting so please help me along if I make a mistake. First off though you should know I have been through every search set I could think of and found no answers yet. I'm desperate!

So here it is: I've had a persistent error ever since messing with my drivers and installing dot net 4.0 and 4.5. I had to run some takeown command from cmd to install those buggers. Now when I try to update, or driver sweep and reinstall my amd catalyst driver package I get an error saying I am missing administrator privileges and I am unable to install ati drivers. This is when I need to use a back up restore point to recover my last good configuration. Scary stuff! So what do you all need from me I'll give you whatever helps.

Thanks!!
Chris

You haven't said what operating system that you are using. In windows 7 for example you can use the installation disc to repair the operating system without a total reinstall. That probably isn't going to be as effective as a reinstall though.

I guess you refer to the external hard drive as a means to back up your files. Is this a laptop? Do you have another computer that you can use to move the files to? What are your components and other computer resources.

This may help as well.

Yes I have set myself as administrator and sadly I just don't have the resources to buy an external hard drive so I'm stuck with a partly functioning graphics driver. I would truly appreciate a way to work through this.

Hi Terry I've tried that repair tool in the recent past.

My system specs are windows vista 64bit. I have a single desktop computer, that's it. I'm hoping I can resolve this issue internally within the operating system. It's all I have. I'm imagining that i dont have administrator privileges to install to my system directory, specifically whatever directories the drivers install on. I have tried to install the drivers manually and in safe mode but these new ati drivers are unable to install in safe mode. I have also tried to run the installation by right clicking and running as an administrator. I'm going to try disabling everything and running everything from msiconfig.exe on default start up and services settings and I'll let you know if that works. My Avira anti virus is corrupted. If I can figure out how to uninstall my antivirus maybe I can fix the issue. I'll try that and update here in the next thirty minutes. I'll post any specific errors I have with uninstalling Avira.

I honestly don't know how this was solved. I believe I ran some sort of windows fix, and of course I had to do a clean uninstall/install wherever possible in safe mode. I've now migrated to Win 7 and I have been problem free so far. I believe the issues came with permissions and programs that act to modify the permissions. I used to have AVG and Avira installed on that system. I do not recommend AVG and abstain on a vote for Avira; but Comodo has been a great ally in the internet age.
Good luck my fellow Computernauts.
