My USB keyboard and mouse stop working randomly. Unplugging them and plugging them back in has mixed results. Doing this seems to sometimes allow the keyboard to function properly, but the mouse never regains functionality after the initial disconnect, it just periodically plays the Windows "USB disconnect" sound. At first I thought it might be a break in the mouse cable, but during a period of disconnect I tried connecting a second, simple USB mouse to no avail. It would power on, but the OS wouldn't recognize it as a mouse. It seems the frequency is ramping up slowly over time. I'm really unsure what could be at the root of the problem. I've seen this post about someone who had a similar problem: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1734755/usb-devi... . A guy just said to update the BIOS, and there was no response from the OP after that (I'm assuming that worked). The last time I did a clean install was about 2 years ago - so not that long ago. I would love for this to be an issue of simply updating my BIOS, but I'd also really like to understand what exactly could be causing this. For the record I have not upgraded my BIOS since purchasing the motherboard 2+years ago, but if that's the recommendation then I will gladly do so. Any thoughts?

Relevant Specs:
OS: Win7 x64
Keyboard: relatively recent generic HP keyboard
Mouse: Logitech G500
CPU: i5 2500k

I have a similar issue with my USB 3.0 ports in particular, where mouse severely lags when using it over time. Plugged it into my USB 2.0 ports, no problems. I tried updating the BIOS as that was suggested by multiple people, but same issue. Looking around, I almost wonder if there's just a general issue with USB 3.0 compatibility depending on the hardware being plugged in, drivers, and BIOS versions.

Anywho, it wouldn't hurt to update your BIOS, and also check your motherboard site for driver updates. If its only with your USB 3.0 ports, then plugging it into your USB 2.0 ports could be a liveable workaround.

Yeah it actually is not regarding USB 3.0 parts specifically. The problem arose with USB 2.0 ports. When I said sometimes my keyboard works when I re-plug it in, that actually only happened once, and it was when I plugged my keyboard into the USB 3.0 port after they both stopped working. No permutation of ports attempted with my mouse allowed it to work again though. It's all just extremely bizarre to me. I mean I will update my BIOS if no one can muster a clear answer, but I'd like to try understand the issue rather then lolreset the problem away.

I updated my BIOS from 2.5 to 2.9, and the problem still exists. Is there a log somewhere that would log USB connectivity activity?

So when I experienced only very minor and sporadic hiccups when using that mouse on my laptop, I put all my eggs in one basket and got a new mouse. In the past, when my mouse froze up, only then did I unplug it and plug in another basic USB mouse I had, which didn't resolve the frozen mouse. I considered this to be indicative of a motherboard problem as opposed to a problem with my mouse. However, after plugging in a new gaming mouse and playing for several hours, it seems all symptoms are gone.

Verdict: I can't explain it, but my mouse was causing my system to lock all mouse input, regardless of plugging in another mouse or not. The solution was simply to get a new mouse. I will state again that I have no idea why this is the case, but I'm glad my problem is resolved.

That being the case, I would like for this thread to be marked as solved. Unfortunately I can't mark my own solution as the best solution.
