I am planning a build soon and i plan on using the new-ish Z97 chipset.

But I'm stuck between the Asrock extreme4 and the Msi gaming5 (or new g45).

I was hoping that the people of toms hardware could help me decide.

ps: i would never go for the Fatal1ty series, the claim to be optimised for gaming but they lack important features.

Too easy thanks for the quick reply. Once again Toms's Hardware impresses me. :D

I wouldn't say more phase count = better.

It's actually about the quality of power design instead of cheap marketing gimmicks.

ASRock z97 Extreme 4 is actually using a 6 phase Intersil hybrid/analog controller. So 12 phase is just a marketing gimmick. Yet they still doing false marketing about their pwm is being digital. But IT IS NOT.

On the other hand MSI Gaming 5 has a 4 phase controller. They don't do a silly marketing about their VRM though. But it's still a 4 phase with a doubler.

Extreme 4, still has more phases right? But they actually using lower quality inductors, chokes which can actually do 38A. But MSI's chokes are up to 60A. So with a "rough calculation" Gaming5 can hold up more power here with less chokes and phase count.

Mosfets are about the same quality. ASRock finally seems to abandon cheap DPAK mosfets. Now they are using NexFETs from TI. But not a higher-end one. If MSI is still using the same OnSemi PowerPAKs from the last generation, it's tad more effective, like 42A@6.5W while ASRock's Nexfets are about 40A@6.5. Not a big difference though.

So I wouldn't say AsRock Extreme 4 is better than MSI Gaming 5. They are about the same.
