I am getting this display soon: ASUS VG248QE
I want to take advantage of the 144Hz and the other features but since I won't be using the speakers on the display I figured I don't need HDMI since that's really the only difference right? If not, please elaborate! I love learning new things and would like to hear the verdict on this question!

AFAIK the bandwidth that can be transferred at once is far superior on DVI, HDMI is one of those 'one-size-fits-all' generic connections. It also means that getting a dedicated cord for DVI and sound is MUCH better than a single HDMI, and especially considering the likely use for this is gaming.

Which graphics card do you have? If it can't even do 144fps, it will be a waste of money to get a 144Hz monitor.

What do you mean, "that's really the only difference"? Are you considering other monitors, too? Or are you talking about HDMI's built-in sound?

Agree depending on the rest of your hardware as to weather your system can even do a consistant 144Hz(144fps). If not it would be a compleat waist of money unless you are going to upgrade the rest of your rig also.

Regardless of 144 hz or not, I still pick DVI if you don't need sound. It is more designed for computers, has the option of dual-link
and is a more robust connector where I found HDMI pops out relatively easily. I have never been a fan of HDMI

HDMI can't handle 144Hz in 1080p.

You need DVI if you want to use 144Hz.

I usually get 190 FPS in Tribes Ascend and that game runs like ass. Battlefield 3 I get 145-160 and nothing else really matters. I got the display for more than the 144Hz. I also do LOTS of design work and there have been great reviews for this monitors colors and it's ease of use with my Spyder 4 Pro color calibration tool so I have extra reasons. My current display is a Dell 20" 720p 60hz monitor and well... it's 6 years old and my girlfriend is learning coding so she could use a second monitor for her setup. It works out for all of us, I just needed to know if DVI can handle 120Hz or higher or if I had to have a category 2 HDMI for it's full benefits (Other than the 3D because 3D just sucks)
My rig setup is as follows:
•AMD FX 8120 3.5ghz 8 Core
•16GB AMD Radeon Performance 1600mhz (upgrading soon too... it's kind of blah)
•64GB Samsung 830 SSD (for OS and 1 Game)
•2TB WD Caviar Black (for everything else, thanks steam lol)
• PowerColor AX Radeon HD 7850 x2 (in Xfire mode)
•ASUS Crosshair Formula V Motherboard
•Bells, whistles, gimmicks included.
•I've got red leds all over the case inside! That makes it faster right?!

Okay, you won't be wasting any money getting a 144Hz monitor!

LOL, my computer lights up green. Green means go, and red means stop, so mine is faster. ;)
