Hi guys.
I have a Phenom ii x4 955 cpu 3.2Ghz black edition with a gigabyte 890GX motherboard and 8GB of 1333mhz ram.

Using the AMD overdrive application. I was able to get temperatures of 55-56 Celsius when all cores were maxed out at 100% at a clock of 4.2Ghz

Idling temperatures seem to be around 39 to 40 Celsius.

Is AMD overdrive application enough to determine if this is a stable overclock?

From what I understand things are good as long as temps stay below 60 Celsius for this chip..

Should I use Prime95 or that's overkill...

I'll be happy with a 4Ghz overclock mustless the 4.2

Also running a Dual sapphire vapour-X 5770 crossfire set up.
1TB hard drive 7200rpm.

4 case fans.

Thermaltake V3 blackedition Computer case.

What do you guys think?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Solution
Different people will have different ideas about prime but in most cases if you can run it 20-30 min and the temps are good then thermally your cool if cores start to error will need more vcore.

Ok so my CPU VCORE is 1.504.

I wasn't expecting a stable overclock at 4.2ghz without upping it so no worries.
Ran a prime and got an error in worker #4

No worries.

Lowered multiplier to get 4ghz at CPU VCORE of 1.504 and so far so good. No errors. Running for about ten mins so far. Temps maxed at 58 initially. Stabilized at 56.. It's now 59 though.

Yikes.

Stabilizing at 58.

Should I be concerned with these temps?
I seriously doubt I'll ever come across anything to stress my cup to give such temps.

Games I play are dota 2 and starcraft.

I should be fine with 4ghz or back down to 3.8?

Thanks for the input guys

Ok thanks... The strangest thing happens when I over clock via motherboard. Cpu - z shows that the multiplier is at 19 giving 3.8ghz initially.. then after ten minutes or so it resets to 16x giving 3.2ghz. . Nothing gets it up after this. Not even prime95. .. cte and amd cool and quiet are both disabled. I'm confused.. When using amd overdrive to over clock to 3.8 it stays at 3.8.... any suggestions as to why amd overdrive works better than bios overclock? Am I doing something wrong?

Again thank for the input

Cheers
