Hey Guys,

Well as the title states what server in terms of hardware would be sufficient for my needs? I am going to setup a centralized server in my new business and I don't no much about this side of technology, but I am learning since we won't have money for an IT department. What I want to achieve is file sharing, print sharing, app server, and have a client-server network( I think the correct name is active directory). My business will be small with about a 5-10 computers and we only use about 2-5 programs. Also what OS do you guys recommend for someone with little server experience? Sorry for all the questions Im still learning about the whole networking/server thing.

Thanks in advance!

If you're going to make your money in something else besides computers, then hire a local IT service company. The time involved likely isn't worth your time.

If you want to learn, then start looking at Windows Server for the OS. It has the biggest ecosystem of support, and it's easy to setup & use.

I'm going to echo 2Be here on this one. Unless you've got a skilled and trusted IT professional who you are willing to bring on part time, contact to an expert company or consultant in your area who can provide this kind of setup for you. It's much better to pay someone to set it up the right way the first time, and get the right equipment the first time, then have to do it all over again and buy even more just a little ways down the road.

There's a lot to take into consideration here. Not just the server, but also the network needs and backup solutions. A weak point in one of these areas, such as a powerful server with tons of RAM and processor but only a couple SATA hard drives for running everything of your services is really going to slow things down to a crawl. It is often these little things that can cause huge headaches down the road and can be costly to try and resolve as well.
