I got a TN panel monitor a couple years ago (Asus VS247) for gaming. The upgrade over my previous 1440x900 monitor was marginal at best; response time was not noticeably different despite the fact the old monitor was 5ms and the current one is 2ms. Color accuracy didn't noticeably improve either. Really the only improvement was HDMI support and 1080p. This was when I didn't know nearly as much about PCs, or I'd have gotten an IPS panel to begin with.

For the last couple months I've been dissatisfied with the color accuracy in games and especially digital art; I was working on a wallpaper a couple weeks ago, and I had to keep remaking and editing it every time I saw it on better screens, as more shades and tones I couldn't distinguish accurately on my monitor kept displaying flaws.

With that in mind, I'm looking for a monitor with as accurate of color reproduction and as deep of a black level as is plausible considering a budget of $300 or less. Preferred resolution is 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. Definitely no larger than 25".

However they can get around 50$ over your budget. This may differ on the store you buy it from, of course.

Something from Dell's ultraSharp series will do great. They are made for design and colour accuracy too.

I've seen cheaper monitors with 99% sRGB reproduction. That monitor appears to have 82% reproduction; is that something to be concerned about, or am I misreading something?

Dell's monitors have IPS and they 'in my opinion' have more options e.g. scaling, colour correction/quality e.c.t
BenQ's range may be better suited to your budget though.
