1440p monitor display options

Will games that offer ultrawide resolution, specifically 2560x1080, have an option to play the game at 2560x1080 on 2560x1440 monitor with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen?

Why bother, at that point? Why not just play them at 2560x1440 with no black bars?

If you're concerned about performance, you could just set up a custom resolution and disable scaling and maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio that way.

Rationale :

I really like the ultra widescreen displays. However i know not every game supports them. For those games I would like to play them at full 1440p. However, for the ones that do I prefer 2560x1080. I would rather invest in a monitor that can do both rather than just a strict 2560x1080 ultrawide monitor where games would have to be played at 1920x1080 if ultrawide is not supported.

I do that to play old games at 4:3 1440x1080 on my 1080p monitor, so it'd probably work the same way.

Do you have an Nvidia or AMD card? It's really simple on my GTX 660, but I have no idea about AMD.

Well, you can look up a guide for downsampling on Nvidia cards. That'll at least teach you to make a custom resolution, even if you don't intend to use it for downsampling.

To disable scaling, you'd need to go into your Nvidia control panel. Then click "adjust desktop size and position" on the left side. Then click the small circle thing by the "no scaling" option in the scaling tab. That'll just make it so you can have black bars without it stretching to fill your screen.

To test it before you get a new monitor (assuming you have a lower monitor now and you're wondering about getting a 1440p monitor), you could possibly make another 21:9 resolution like 1890x810 just to see if 21:9 will work with black bars on a monitor of a different resolution. (Just in games that actually support 21:9, of course)
If it works, the new resolution 1890x810 should show up in the list of available resolutions in a game's options menu.

But in actual use ofc, on a 2560x1440 monitor, the custom resolution would need to be 2560x1080.
