Hey people. I know threads like these pop up a lot but I would really love some input.
I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card and I'm unsure whether to go for an MSI GTX 780 TwinFrozr Gaming 3 GB or a Sapphire RADEON R9 290 Tri-X OC.
I will only be gaming on a single monitor - so 1920x1080. I want to play current and future titles like Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs and the like. The MSI is ever so slightly more expensive in my country but I'm not really sure if that necessarily equals better performance. Another reason I would love some feedback is that a lot of the reviews seems to fall on the TI version which is definitely too expensive for me. Hope too hear from you, and thanks :).

I don't know if its relevant but the rest of my hardware is as follows.
CPU: Intel I5 3570K
Motherboard: ASRock z77 Extreme 4
Ram: 8 GB

the R9 290X is still the best option, Toms Hardware did review with both of these cards at 4k 9I know you won't be at that resolution) and the R9 290X destroyed the GTX 780, by quite a bit. That is a good reason that it will be able to play games maxed out for longer, or if you decide to go multiple monitors.

The Tri-X is a great choice, I highly recommend it.

I own the Gigabyte Windofrce 3X of R9 290X, and done an amazing but rare overclock of 1295Mhz on the core clock stable, the best overclock I have seen for this card.

As far I understand those comparisons are made on the reference cards and not the individual cards produced by the respective companies. For instance I read that when the R9 290x initially had some trouble with cooling where sapphire gave a crack at it with the triple fan system. So wouldn't it be inaccurate, or at least a crude comparison, to not factor in what specifications the two companies has added to their respective cards. In the comment section on your link people seem to suggest that the data provided is pretty biased. I'm no expert so I can't really make that judgement for myself. But thanks for your feedback.

Generally speaking from my experience i would always get Nvidia even if it was slightly slower than AMD one they just have way better driver support and have less issues overall i only recommend AMD at the lower brackets as they are more value oriented.

Appreciate the feedback so far. Sourodip, I am a little unsure of what you mean exactly. You say that you suggest I buy the MSI lightning edition if that edition is cheaper than the gtx 780. However the MSI lightning edition is a gtx 780, albeit another edition of it?

Okay, awesome answer. Appreciate it. Definitely leaning towards the R9 290x. Now I just have to double check it will fit properly in my apevia x-cruiser mid atx case. I honestly just didn't bother up too this point if it turned out there would be massive support for the GTX 780 :)

the sapphire is long, coming in at a length of 303mm, pretty big. The max GPU length you can support is 279mm, you don't have enough room. If you can sections of the HDD bay it will fit, just check that out.

The MSI R9 290X Twin Frozr will fit, which is just as good at cooling and is less noisy, it will just fit with 0.13 inches left until it hits HDD bay.).

Okay I think I will have to check the sections of the HDD bay, because the MSI R9 290x Twin Frozr is a bit out of my price range. At least with the prices here in Denmark.
