Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade from my 17" hp L1706 monitor to a lot bigger 3 monitor display. Can I put a 27" monitor in the middle and two 24" monitors on the sides or do they all have to be exactly the same monitor? And whichever I end have going with can someone suggest some good monitors? Preferably 2560 x 1440 or is that resolution a waste of money? One last question: Is 3 monitors even possible on a single Gigabyte GTX 780 OC 3GB or am I wasting my time? Also this is to run FSX so that is why I am wanting 3 monitors...

Thanks, Tom

Solution

Yeah! having DVI natively by monitor is better than messing with adapters :D
There is guide how to setup triple monitors :)
http://www.cclonline.com/article/1193/Guide/Graphics-Cards/Configuring-Multiple-Monitors-NVIDIA-Surround-Single-GPU-/
nVidia "Surround" supported by DVI-(I), HDMI and DisplayPort.

I wouldn't recommend you Gigabyte's GTX-780 because I saw to many bad things about Gigabyte's high end card look at Asus, EVGA and MSI

Edit: I found that almost every triple monitor setup with three identical monitors is better than one 27'inch and two 23/24'inch monitor setup. Middle 27'inch...
You can use different monitors in triple monitors setup but 1440p would be significantly more expensive than 1080p some say that 1440p is worth some not, personally I never used 1440p but I think it's worth, And last single GTX-780 can give you gaming with three 1080p monitors but single 1440p would eat a lot of it's power :)

Edit: For Fly Simulator X single GTX-780 would be more than enough with even 1440p monitor :)

I would get three 1080p monitors because of price.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27.0" Monitor ($478.98 @ Best Buy)
Monitor: Asus MX239H 23.0" Monitor ($199.00 @ Amazon)
Monitor: Asus MX239H 23.0" Monitor ($199.00 @ Amazon)
Monitor: Asus MX279H 27.0" Monitor ($289.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $1166.97
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

But you can get two 23'inch 1080p and one 1440p monitor for a bit more price. :D

Gonna knock this out one point at a time:

On AMD, you can use 3 different size monitors so long as they all share a common resolution rather easily. Nvidia is a bit more picky, but so long as they all share a common resolution, ie 1080p, it tends to be ok. They will all 3 need to be in landscape orientation (or portrait) but not both.

1440p will be a waste in that situation since it will be forced to downgrade to 1080p to match the side monitors. You would be better off in that case buying 3 matching monitors.

The 780 will handle the triple monitor/FSX demands, but the quality will suffer in a single card setup to maintain FPS versus an SLI config.

Monitor recommendation depends on what you're looking for in a monitor, ie. TN/IPS, price, response time/refresh rate, etc.

Thanks for the reply :) ,
So does that mean they do not all have to share a common display? I think I will go for a 1x 1080p MX279H + 2x 1080p MX239H anyway just because the single 1440p would be forced to downgrade to 1080p so i thought no point. Would that configuration work? I've done some research and decided that 3 1440p monitors would eat my single GTX 780. Also just out of curiosity can a 24 inch monitor even display in 1440p?

Thanks for the reply :) ,
Based on what you have said I decided to go with an all 1080p 3 monitor display: 1x MX279H + 2x MX239H. Is that a good setup or do you recommend something else?

Honestly I didn't know before that 1440p monitor would be downgraded to 1080p with other 1080p monitors so Yes three 1080p monitors (2x 23'inch and 1x 27'inch) would work with single GTX-780 just fine :)
23'inch monitor can be 1440p however there is already 24'inch 4k monitor from Dell :)

I just realized that the MX series only support HDMI. They come with a DVI to HDMI cable but will this make the image quality worse or better? The only other input on that monitor is a vga cable but my GPU doesn't have an ouput for that :( . So can I just use the DVI - HDMI or is that no good?

I'm pretty sure that your GPU has DVI-I (Dual link) output and you can use DVI to VGA adapter which comes with almost all GTX-780(ti)'s :)

Thanks for all the help :)
Okay so I'm getting a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 OC 3GB. It's IO features a DVI-I and a DVI-D. So it comes with a DVI to VGA adapter right? If it only has one cable the how do I get three monitors working? (You dont have to explain that here but if you could link me to another website or video that would be great). Also I can't find any website that has what comes in the box with this could you link one?
Thanks again, sorry I'm having a hard time understanding this

Three VG248H's would look like this

Ah yes I just went to the amazon website for the gigabyte GTX 780 and read the reviews. There were lots of posotive ones but to many 1 and 2 stars for my liking so I'm considering the ASUS GTX 780 Directcu ii and maybe overclock that because it runs the coolest and quietest out of all the non-reference cards (According to LinusTechTips). All 27" monitors would be just to much for my desk and I wouldn't have enough room, but 2x 24inch + 1 27" seemed Just okay. I think I will take your advice on just getting three 24" monitors coz I dont want to be spending $800 on something that wouldn't be worth the time and money + I'm new to this soooo... thanks for the help I found an answer to my question :)

I have actually decided to go with Asus's DirectCU II Gtx 780ti because I have some extra money now that I'm going with those monitors. I hope that this will give me even better performance :) .

It should and it will give you awesome performance with 3 monitor setup :)
