There would be possible VRAM issues, maybe go for 2 290s instead.

Ya it can run 4k too.
3gb Vram gives you the Ultra in games so its more than enough.

Part of how smooth the game will run depends on the game itself on how demanding it really is... but with your setup i would say yes it should run them just fine.
3GB of vram is usually more than enough...the only case where i might see it struggling would be if you were gaming constantly on 4k resolution on an extremely taxing game in a triple monitor setup or something along these lines...

which games? by smoothly, can we assume 60fps? which cpu are you using?

Yeah 60 fps on games such as Batman Arkham Origins, BF4, COD Ghosts, League of Legends, DOTA 2, Crysis 3 Etc.
So a range of games but i would like >45 fps on the most demanding games

^+1, though it should be able to obtain an average of 45fps in crysis 3, minimums are a different story though

Im Using a Core i7 4790 as i do not intend to over clock i was going to get the 4770 k in the first place though

Yes two 780s will work, but two 290s would work better and come out a good bit cheaper. What parts do you have already?

So you don't have a video card yet? Then I recommend the Sapphire Tri-X 290 in Crossfire. It would fit perfectly in your system.
