Hi guys,

Could somebody tell me which combo should be better with a R9 280X?:

ASUS M4A78T-E
Phenom II X4 955 BE Deneb (C2 Stepping)

Vs.

M5A88-V EVO
AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W

I'm not considering buying any of these... I have both of them, and I'm trying to figure out which is the better combo.

Is the FX build superior over the Phenom II for gaming? I could overclock the FX a bit, whereas my Phenom II cannot go past 3.6 Ghz stable since it is rev. 2. If not, is the motherboard at least significantly better so that I could get a new AM3+ CPU?

Thanks..

M5A88-V EVO + 6100 for sure. The board is a decent overclocker, and will handle the more powerful AMD 8 core CPUs.

The M4A78T-E, on the other hand, doesn't even support the FX series. So for both overclocking and upgradability, the M5A88-V EVO is the only option.

And while the 6100 is obviously the better choice of the two listed, it isn't a great processor itself. You'd be well served to upgrade it, otherwise it won't keep up with your graphics card in many titles.

At the very least, get a 6300 with a good cooler and overclock it.

Very cool.. thanks.

What is the best AM3+ CPU that I should get now to be able to max out the potential of my R9 280X?

Cheers..

Exactly. In fact, you should be able to achieve a higher stable OC with a 6300/6350, which equates to higher singlethreaded performance and the optimal gaming performance.
