Hi guys, need some quick help.

I have a Samsung 500GB HDD that I've been using for the past 3 years or so, it seems to run fine.

However I just built a new PC and move this drive over to the new machine. Every couple of days, Win7 give me a messsage that it detects a hard drive failure and ask me to back up. A day or so after, it would no longer detect my HDD. I run Win7 on an SSD, btw.

So, I open up the case. Disconnect the SATA and and power cables from the HDD, wait a few minutes, reconnect and then Win7 would recognize the HDD again. And a few days later, I would get the same error and Win7 won't find the HDD. So, I would disconnect and reconnect cables again, and the HDD shows up.

I tried switching to another SATA slot on the mobo, but that doesn't seem to help.

So the question is:

Is the HDD really failing and I should get a new drive to replace, or could there be issues with the cables or SATA/power connection, etc.?

Thanks

It could be that the drive is failing.

Have you checked your HDD's SMART data for problems yet? D/L and install CrystalDiskInfo to check your HDD SMART status: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-...

Please post your results here.

3 years old could be the firmware of the drive on these newer boards and most time if I try to reuse a drive it ends up I wish I just got a new one to start with.. [opinion]
