Black screen of death

I have a laptop that shows nothing but the black screen of death. The laptop powers up but the hdd light never turns on. I've tried all the fixes I could find online. I suspect it may be a motherboard issue being that the laptop isn't that old and it did get slightly wet a few years ago. I had to replace the keyboard then and the ac input a few months ago. I've got some pretty important docs on that hdd, plus sentimental stuff, so I'd really like to get it back. I've already bought a new laptop, a Samsung ultra book with usb 3.0 and an SDD. What's the best way to copy the memory? I already have the HDD out of the old laptop. I was thinking usb to sata cable, but I read so many mixed reviews. I've used IDE to usb 2.0 in the past, but I found them to be finicky. I should mention that i did back up the laptop to an external hdd a few months ago, but i don't remember how I did so. Also, do you think the original problem could be the motherboard? I've already replaced one, and I wouldn't mind doing it again. Any advice?
