So, I recently imaged a debian distro of linux (Kali, to be specific) and when I first got it booted it worked find. When trying to install Nvidia drivers on it, I had to upgrade the distro. So I did the "apt-get distro upgrade" command and began to download about a gigabyte of data. In the middle of it, in went to sleep, and when I went to wake it up it asked for a password, which I never set. When I couldn't get back in, I waited for like a few minutes. Once I realized there was nothing I could do, I decided to restart. Once I got back to the Kali boot screen, it was taking WAY longer to boot in. Eventually after about 30 minutes of it trying to boot, I stopped it. That happened a few more times, and now I'm just gonna re-image the drive. However, it only shows up in the windows disc management, and in the disk management, it says it can't format it. I'm not sure what to do or how to clear it..

Test the hard drive with "SeaTools for Windows" to see if it's faulty: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/sea...

It failed the short generic test, but I'm running a few other tests. I don't understand how it could work one second, and then completely die the next.

That's the very nature of hard drives, they can fail just like turning off a light. Hard drives have delicate moving parts inside them so sudden mechanical failure should come as no surprise to anyone who understands how they work.
