I am looking into getting a r9 290 and need a new cpu to go with it. I want to game on ultra and I know more games will use 8 cores. Would the i7 or the 8350 be a better choice, I want the best performance and i dont want to upgrade anytime soon

The i7 is better (and a lot more expensive). Are you going to overclock and what will be the rest of your system?

If you are not going to OC, the Xeon 1230 V3 would be a great choice. It's basically an i7-4770 with a bit lower clockspeeds and no integrated graphics, but it costs significantly less than the i7-4770.

If you can afford it the 4770K will out perform the FX 8350. If you're on a budget then get an FX 8350. That said, I think either an i5 3570K/4670K should suffice as well. I wouldn't worry at all about core count requirements. When it comes down to it there are no true 8 core CPU's until Broadwell rolls around. Not even AMD has eight true cores. That said, it's all dependent on what you want. Personally my choice chain would be 4770K > 4670K = 3570K >= FX 8350.
