Which CPU is better for gaming?

I'm building my first PC and I'm torn between these two CPUs: The AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor amd the Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor. Is the extra $40 really necessary? I'll want to be able to run some older titles (Civilization, Shogun 2) on ultra settings. And maybe high settings for the newer titles. I've herad that the Intel one has a better single core performance what exactly do I have to be doing for it to outperform the AMD? In case it matters here's my video card: XFX Radeon R9 270 2GB Double Dissipation Video Card. So... what do you recommend? Thanks in advance!

I'd go with the i3, more room to grow later and better single core performance, older games don't usually use multiple cores after all.

For older games that mostly use one or two cores the i3 is better than the 760k. For new games that use 4 core the 760k is better. Keep in mind you can't overclock an i3 while the 760k is build for overclocking and can go pretty high.

As emdea22 said, the 760k will do better in multi-core games, generally speaking. At this budget level, Intel chips aren't exactly leaps ahead of AMD chips. Once the budget increases, Intel begins to distance itself.

Of course, you could spend a little more and buy an FX6300...
