Hey all,
I just recently bought a R9 280X, I don't mine coin, or do anything over stressing to it other than playing ArmA 3 on high settings, but even in the lobby screen of ArmA 3, it spikes up to 91c, it stays pretty damned high while playing too, ranging from 76-91c, and when I am out of game, it stabilizes at 56c, rarely ever goes below that.

The ambient temperatures of my computer at the time are pretty different than the video cards temps, ranging from a min of 32c min to 57c max, I do run 2 monitors, but only use one to play games, the other is just a basic browsing monitor, and I maintain proper airflow, I have a PCI fan, 3 active case fans, and a h60 hybrid water cooler for the processor, I have not really adjusted anything for it in the bios or ccc, as I don't know what to really adjust in the first place if I need to at all.

Is this card defective? I bought it as a discounted purchase when I exchanged my standard R9 280 because the rear ports gave out, they had the one I have now as a returned purchase but they apparently tested it to make sure everything was okay with it. I can easily go exchange it for another, but I would love some input regarding these temperatures. I haven't really had any issues with performance, or any noticable artifacting, but at the temps the card is getting, I feel it is already accelerating the age.

43c is completely normal. There are some newer monitors out there that doesn't require power as your does, but we're talking about 2-3 degress lower, so it's still not gonna fix your problem.
Have you tried another game? Do you have Battlefield, or any other GPU hungry game you could test it on? Does your card shoot up at 91c within minutes, or does it take some time? You could also increase your fan speed in Catalyst control center.
This article about 280x twinfrozr shows that max temp on load is 68 max, so yes 91 is way too high for an AMD. These cards shouldn't exceed 75-80c, as it will definitely burn out the card someday.

Which 280x is it? Is it a stock cooler the GPU has?
Adding another monitor blows the temps up another 10-12c. Try unplugging it while playing you'll see at least 10c drop in temps.
The stock cooler of the R9 series are known for their high temps and for being loud.

The cooler it is running is the Twin Frozr IV, I just unplugged the second monitor and the temps did drop to 43c from 57c (idle), but it's not going any lower than that. Are these temps normal? Is there any way to avoid having to unplug my other monitor while playing? That kinda makes me sad that I would have to do that as I like using the second one for other stuff. Would getting a more modern monitor tone down the temps? It's A 6 year old LCD monitor.

Edit:
Could I mount my previous video card (hd6870) in the second pcie slot and use it for the second monitor to relieve some of the stress of the r9 280x?

Update: I tested the active temps while in the arma 3 lobby screen and it shot up to 91c again even with 1 monitor.

My case has decent airflow, and my MSI 280x idles at 31-41c.

On BF4 running at 99% GPU usage it goes upto 69c (Max I'll ever play in one sitting is around 90 mins).

I did have to adjust the Fan profile in afterburner as it wasn't aggressive enough for me but it should give you a decent guide.

Oh .. I game on one screen and have another open for general crap (like temp monitoring!).

I've tried it on Payday 2, ArmA 3, Civ V, Shogun 2, and Farcry 3, the temp spikes really high within minutes while playing, I guess i'll just go exchange it today, I'd rather not bother waiting for it to burn out so I can RMA it, I got it less than a week ago.
