Hello guys I'm fairly new to customizing PC builds. I currently own a Dell XPS 8700 with an i7-4770 and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 OEM video card.

The Witcher 3 and DA: Inquisition beckon my savings to dwindle.

I'm looking to upgrade to a GTX 770 after reading many great and thorough threads on Tom's Hardware forums. I have found the Gigabyte GV-N770OC-2GD GeForce GTX 770 2GB card on Newegg (here) and am hoping that this is my answer. (any other suggestions are welcome)

However, this means I need a new PSU! Fantastic considering I know nothing about them. Would anyone have a recommendation considering my current conditions? Looking for a solid power supply around 750W perhaps to future proof my desktop.

Also, if anyone would like to point out a few things I should know so I can learn from this experience, please let me know :)  I need a little psu 101 here

More about : gtx 770 psu xps 8700

one of the best( and also the cheapest) top quality PSUs you can get right now is this one

Power Supply: XFX ProSeries 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($89.99 @ NCIX US)

Its a tier 1 psu made by seasonic. It Has a silent mode so under idle loads makes no noise. 62A on a single 12v rail so you can even sli 2 770 if you want (although some might argue that that is pushing it a bit)

Looks like a great buy. So when I'm shopping for PSUs (taking your suggestion for an example) what specifications do I need to be looking at? I've noticed that the GPU I want needs a 6-pin and 8-pin power connection, so do I look for that in the PSU specs? Any other important aspects to consider?

EDIT: Would it also be wise to wait for a summer sale on these products? I know Steam is a big fan of pasty-white indoor skin with their summer sales, not sure about electronics parts.

when getting a PSU make sure it has enough amps. The PSU and GPU will come with all the power cables you need so you dont need to worry about that. With any upper tier psu you dont really need to worry about much as long as the amps and watts meet your requirements. as far as waiting, I'd just get it now. that is a really low price for one of the best PSU on the market and i don't see you getting as better deal any time soon.

Funny you replied today, I just purchased it from Amazon. Looks like there's an issue with one reviewer recently who didn't get what they ordered (a "replacement" model lesser in quality) so I'll keep an eye on that. Thanks for the info!

I'll update this thread once I get it in the mail for any last-minute details and whatnot

It is done! I received the power supply a couple days ago and just got to installing it just a few minutes ago. It works fine with my system currently, and I will be purchasing the GTX 770 over the summer once I have the money.

The actual PSU that I got is the XTR 750, not the ProSeries 750. They are both 80+ Gold, and the XTR has the exact same model number as the ProSeries advertised online (wondering if this is a permanent change from Pro to XTR..?). After reading XTR reviews I think this will still be a solid PSU so I'm going to keep it.

ANY OTHER XPS 8700 USERS: This PSU was an absolute PAIN to install in my desktop. It is the first time I've ever installed a PSU, but I had the most trouble with the case itself. The case has tabs that stick out to fit the old PSU perfectly, and the XFX is just an inch longer than the original PSU, making it very difficult to sit straight on top of (instead of inside) the tabs. Any PSU bigger than the XFX will not fit, I believe, because of some wires that are used for the USB/mic/headphone inputs on top of the tower that jam up tightly against the XFX.

After some time I was able to fit the XFX inside. It does sit a little crooked, but the screws fit in and it works. It is by no means a jerry-rigged setup, but it sure felt like it trying to squeeze it in!
