i currently have a amd fx8150 cpu, and was thinking about upgrading my motherboard, however if im going to change my motherboard have i to buy a new type cpu, maybe a intel one.
I was looking at the new amd fx9590 for around the £200 mark, or so i buy a intel processor. ive always had amd and never really had any problems with them, but alot of people rate intel alot better. Can anyone give me some advice please, as to what intel processors are good for gaming. thanks, like i said my budget would be around the £200 mark for a new cpu.

Solution
I would strongly recommend Intel. The fx9590 draws about 220W at stock speeds, and overclocking it your power could hit 250W or even 300W. The Intel are 85W at stock speeds. For about 10 pounds extra you can get the I7-4770K which will be faster in every way than the AMD, especially if overclocked. The I5-4670K will also be faster and is quite a bit cheaper. It's a far better deal, especially with about one-third the power.

In about one to two weeks the refresh of the Haswell is coming out, the Devil's Canyon. This is the 4770K & 4670K with improved cooling in the package, now called the 4790K & 4690K. They should only cost 10 pounds or so more each. They should be able to overclock to 5GHz. That will make them ultra fast. For your...

If you want some future proofing, get the 4790K.

I agree, skip the AMD it's a forced solution to AMD's inability to be competitive with Intel chips. Go with the 4770K and you will never regret it--I say this as a long time AMD user (since Slot A Athalon processors). Since you were looking to buy a new board already, the extra outlay will be relatively small.

As soon as I get the coin together, I'm moving to Intel, it's about a 20-30% increase in performance.

Ohh. It would be a real shame to "upgrade" to the 9590. While it has an impressive clock speed, it still won't be much of an upgrade over the 8150.

You would get much more performance for your dollar, and MUCH less power consumption if you went with the 4690K and overclocked it. If you don't want to wait for the Devil's Canyon releases to be readily available, the 4670K would also be a perfectly suitable option.

The negatives (Cost, huge TDP, runs hot, has an inefficient architecture) of the 9590 outweigh the benefits (5GHz Vishera). Upgrading to Z97 with an Intel i5 would net better results for the same amount of money, and offer upgrade options in the future.

Despite all the above recommendations to move to Intel, I doubt you will really notice much of a difference in gaming (although intel is better). As far as I'm aware, the 8150 shouldn't bottleneck any modern single GPU card.

That being said, most tests show you can gain ~5-10 fps by switching to an i5, if you are running on a 60hz monitor and get an average of 60+fps in games then you will NOT notice a difference.

An absolute benefit, however, is undoubtedly that you will consume less power and produce less heat.

It really depends on the games you play. What BTPMatthew said is almost universally true for singleplayer games, however in multiplayer games you will experience more FPS dips and experience lower minimums.

thanks for all the feedback guys, so it looks like intel may be a better option. its a big move for me as ive always used amd, as they were cheaper but still gave good performances. the only reason im thinking of moving to intel is i had a fx4300 cpu around 6 months ago and changed to the fx8150 6-core cpu, which was a big jump. and i noticed no difference in performace/ fps ect on anything. i currently get around 55fps on bf4 on multiplayer. but will be thinking of maybe changing my graphics card to a sli set-up, will intel be better for this or amd?
thank again to everyone whos added some feedback !

Under £200, the best value processor will be either the i5-4690K or the i5-4670K (if you're overclocking). There's no competition. A bit over budget is the 4790K and 4770K. Both will yield marginal gains over the above i5s. Not worth the premium for gaming alone.

You should also buy a Z97 motherboard if you want to take advantage of the LGA 1150's upgradability.
