I have a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 machine. Recently, after cleaning a virus, my mouse would not work. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, etc. I tried a system restore which also failed.
Finally, I ran a system file check which requested that I insert my OS CD to copy files that had been corrupted on my computer. When I insert my recovery disk I get a message saying that this is not the right disk. I also do not get an option to point the computer to a different location to find the files.
So, my question is, can I extract just the operating system from the recovery disks? I've seen in some discussions that one of the problems I would encounter is that the OS has probably been modified to include software in support of specific hardware that the computer came with. This shouldn't be a problem as I want to use it on the computer it was meant for. I just need to be able to extract the corrupted system files. I considered just getting them from another Windows XP computer but I realized, there doesn't seem to be a way for me to find out which files have been corrupted.
As I'm sure is true of most of you, I've become highly dependent on my computer and the withdrawal I'm experiencing having not had it for about a week is killing me.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

It is not possible to "extract" the OS from recovery CDs.

You can try using the recovery CD and then start the computer. It is also possible to do a repair or re-install of the system using this CD, but if you do so you will lose all other installed programs and all data files.

If you have a backup that would be the ideal situation.
