Worth upgrading my CPU? Is a bottleneck affecting my gaming performance?

Hi all

First time poster here so be gentle!

I have recently cobbled together a gaming pc, and am wondering what benefits I would see if I upgrade my cpu, RAM and motherboard? I play mainly Battlefield 4, Titanfall etc, and was looking to upgrade to an I5 4670k, with 8 gb 1600mhz RAM. I currently have a pc with the below specs. It generally runs quite well with Battlefield getting circa 45 FPS on Ultra, and about 70 FPS on high, and stable temps. There doesn't seem to be any bottlenecking from my cpu, but am not really sure how to check!

Any advice will be appreciated.

AMD Phenom II x 6 1055 OC'ed to 3.5ghz
12GB 1333mhz ddr 3 RAM
1tb wd 7200 rpm HD
NVIDIA GTX 770
Novatech 500W ATX Power Supply

If you are happy with the performance you are getting, I really wouldn't bother upgrading. I would say you are doing pretty good based on what you are saying you are getting for FPS. A CPU and motherboard upgrade might get you a bit more on ultra, but honestly, I would just hold onto what you have. You chip is technically faster than a stock FX 6300, as Phenom II was a bit faster clock for clock.

Even if you upgrade your system there wont be any differences. In term of speed and performance intel i5 will beat your current system since its 22nm made and its k edition. And you can do overclocking well using proper mobo la. If you want to compare gaming performance the fps will be slightly higher in intel i5 for sure. But in nutshell you will feel the same gaming performance. But in term of rendering and performance intel i5 have higher lead since intel are have better processing power. Since you r getting new 4th gen spec. The budget will be quite high and if it is your interest just go on. Its worth a upgrade but the differences in gaming. Well you must feel it yourself. :D

You will get a smoother experience (Solidly >60 FPS on ultra at 1080p) using the 4670K, however, as logainofhades said, if you're happy with your performance, then there's no need to upgrade!

It also depends on the games you play. If you play any games of the Arma series, you will need to upgrade if you want to get decent FPS and avoid serious bottlenecking. But as far as most games are concerned, you're probably fine for a while with what you have!

Thanks for the thrifty response chaps. You just saved me a fair wedge :)

Just one last question, which may be a tad silly. Why are the ARMA games so much hungrier cpu wise then? Are they just poorly optimised?

Haha. Poor optimization certainly has something to do with it, they aren't exactly polished games. :p

Though the biggest factor is just their sheer scale. Especially when you're in a large firefight, your processor has to calculate so many geometries, complex bullet trajectories and sometimes even AI. All this, combined with the largest battlefield you'll see in a video game, makes for one heck of a CPU load.

Although the 4670K performs quite admirably. I upgraded from a 5 year old dual core (Core 2 Duo @ 2.6 GHz) to the 4670K, and I was blown away by the difference. In some cases I saw something like a 400% increase in FPS.

Needless to say, I was excited.

Don't say that! You'd only just convinced me NOT to upgrade!! Haha!

In all seriousness I've got ARMA 2 including the DayZ mod and it copes pretty well, just gets pretty choppy in and around built up areas. Haven't tried ARMA 3 yet though. Not sure the rig would cope!!

Actually, I think you would get around the same FPS in A3 as A2. You have a GTX 770, so the revamped graphics wouldn't affect your FPS, and the CPU load is about the same. I've noticed similar performance anyway!
